In , when Mason's "Chickenhawk" was on the New York Times best seller list, its author was in prison for trying to sail a boat full of marijuana into the country. How an ace Army helicopter pilot became a drug smuggler is revealed in Mason's second book, "Chickenhawk: Back in the World.". Chickenhawk is Robert Mason's narrative of his experiences as a "Huey" UH-1 Iroquois helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. The book chronicles his enlistment, flight training, deployment to and experiences in Vietnam, and his experiences after returning from the war/5(13).

He wrote his best selling memoir, Chickenhawk, seventeen years later. Weapon, a novel about a military robot who wouldn't obey orders followed, then Chickenhawk: Back in the World, about the difficulties he faced after the war, and Solo, a sequel to Weapon in which Solo moves to NYC, thinking he will fit in. Chickenhawk: Back in the World, Life After Vietnam. Available on Kindle, iBookstore, Barnes&Noble, and from many other eBook sellers.. How did the year-old combat helicopter pilot cope with life after Vietnam? "I was a crazy insomniac at 38, 15 years a veteran helicopter pilot from the Vietnam War.

Editorial Reviews "Very simply the best book so far about Vietnam." -St. Louis Post-Dispatch"[Chickenhawk]'s vertical plunge into the thickets of madness will stune readers."-Time"Mason's gripping memoir proves again that reality is more interesting, and often more terrifying, than fiction.".   Very interesting to read the book (from the pilot's perspective) then see the film from the ground perspective. Important to remember that there is a little poetic licence used in the book too. Joker Chickenhawk by Robert Mason, first published by Viking-Penguin in , is now in its 23rd printing. © by Robert Mason.

A moving and no-holds-barred account of the downward spiral. In the mean time, I found Chickenhawk: Back in the World: Life After Vietnam, which is basically the story behind the story, and read that book also.

I knew Robert Mason lived up in the panhandle of Florida and I was actually going to pay him a visit but thought it was best if I called first.

Read Chickenhawk years ago. Then again and again. Superb book in class of its own. Wanted the sequel but whenever I found it, it was a collectors item and very expensive.

Now it has appeared on Kindle, I'm very grateful. If you've read the first book, then this is a must. However, I don't think it works as a stand-alone book.
